Turns out people were registering domains way back in 1985.

Fascinating! I would love to hear the story behind some of the less obvious ones (octopus.com!?).

    Amazed that the more obvious ones don't show-up: a.com, 1.com, newsvine.com...
Imagine the concept of newsvine in 1985. That's weird. No back to sleep.

Nice that the oldest domain is lacking a nice design. They had the longest to figure out a nice design goes a long way.

That list is fascianting; I'm a sucker for 'net history. Symbolics turns out to be in my hometown! Boy do they need a design though, hehe.

Well, since the sites listed aparently are the top 100 first registered that are like still active... that would explain a lot ;)

Wow, I was just thinking about something like this.

Wouldn't the organisation that handles the registration (whoever was that at the time), register their own name first??

Does anyone know (offhand) what the cost to register a domain was at that time?

                    Erin,

I don't remember how much it cost but I do remember friends of mine purchasing domain names back in 1990 for their companies and I believe it was through InterNic (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

I never really followed that much about AMD's history, but its interesting to see them as a company listed there amoung other big names like Cisco. I'm surprised that I don't see other high-tech domain names during that timeframe like Atari (who had a big stake in gaming and PC development on-and-off) and Digital (granted, they did register dec.com. Perhaps I'm more accustomed to today's image of "register all domain names closely related to your company's name before someone else does").
